This costume came about because I was awarded with the wonderful parasol at the Browncoat Ball 2004 in Chicago. I had wanted to make it already but with the parasol, it became a necessity. So the quest for fabrics begins to match the orignal as best as possible.
My jumpsuit is made out of this beautiful olive stretch sateen. I love this fabric. I have since bought it in almost every color I can find. It was a dream to sew and it wears beautifully, but I can't find it now that I want to make a Serenity jumpsuit. The teddy bear patch was the most interesting part of it all. I couldn't find the patch anywhere online so I made it. I bought some fur and washed and dried it because the jumpsuit would have to be washed and dried. This completely ratted out the fur. It had been nice and soft and quite lovely. I was hoping to make tribbles from the excess width but ratted tribbles wasn't quite what I was looking for. It was also way too long so I cut down the length and satin-stitched the lines in. I think it turned out pretty well and does make mine version a bit different from others.
The shirt fabric was a lucky find in the clearance section. The jacket was a bit harder to find. Brocades weren't popular where I was at that time and it was near impossible to find a turquoise brocade much less the right design. I finally found this one and paid more than I wanted to but it was on sale so it could have been worse.
I was hoping to make the flip-flops closer to what Kaylee wears but I was lucky enough just to get all of this done in time for the Minneapolis pre-screening. I still haven't gotten back to the flip-flops and I'm not sure that I will. They have become my favorite pair of shoes just the way they are.
UPDATE: This past year at ComicCon was very exciting. I got to meet Joss Whedon while standing in line!! Bryan was parking the car at the time and had the cameras so I missed out on the perfect photo op but Bryan somehow won the chance to get his autograph. So, one of the things he took was my parasol. So, the wonderful parasol that I won at the Browncoat Ball now has Joss Whedon's signature! I still get a silly grin on my face whenever I think of it.
